This breed is famously bold, curious, and clever. Dachshunds are loyal and often form a strong, sometimes stubborn, bond with a single person. Origin & History
The Dachshund, famously known as the “Wiener Dog” or “Sausage Dog,” hails from Germany, with breeding origins tracing back to the 15th century. Developed to hunt badgers (“Dachs” meaning badger, “Hund” meaning dog), their long, low-slung bodies, courageous nature, and powerful digging paws were perfect for flushing game from burrows.
Physical Characteristics
Dachshunds come in three coat varieties: Smooth (short and shiny), Longhaired (silky and elegant), and Wirehaired (dense and rough). They are also bred in two sizes: Standard (16-32 lbs, originally for badgers) and Miniature (11 lbs and under, for hunting rabbits). Their color and pattern range includes solid red, black & tan, chocolate & tan, dapple, brindle, and more.
